From the series Beyond Matter.
Multidisciplinary artist Levi van Veluw was born in the Dutch town of Hoevelaken in 1985 and studied at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem. He became known in 2008 for a series of self-portraits, combining drawings, stones and landscapes with the image of his face. His work has since been exhibited in various locations in Europe and the United States, and has earned him numerous nominations and awards. Levi produces multidisciplinary works comprising photography, video, sculpture, installation and drawing.
Born in a Calvinist stronghold, Levi has always been fascinated by religion and its rituals. In his series Beyond Matter, he explores how various religions and spiritual movements around the world operate in the mind of the faithful through form and image. He wonders if he, as an artist, is able to create a convincing spiritual experience. The size of this sculpture, the hand-moulded clay, the blue colour and the ritual arrangement give his work an unmistakably sacred appearance.
